Creativity and Innovation with Technology

Future (2)Future

ISTE Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation. Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative projects and processes using technology.

How can my students be collaborative and creative using technology in an 8th grade LA/SS class?

Looking at the skills required for future knowledge-based jobs, it is imperative students can be able to be creative and innovative with digital media and technology in order to communicate to a wide audience (Bates). Digital storytelling gives students that experience.

Storytelling is a beautiful format in which to learn how to engage, persuade and teach an audience. It is a power method of communication in the media today. A storyteller is required to be passionate and knowledgeable about something. A storyteller is required to organize their thoughts and ideas in an effective way in order to deliver material powerfully. Storytelling requires a creative voice (Dillon, 2014).

Digital storytelling gives student the reigns when demonstrating their mastery over a topic. Students can gather in depth knowledge about a topic that interests them and choose how to present it using all the digital media formats available to them: image, video, text, music. Students showcase, curate, and showcase their knowledge as storytelling (Robin, 2008). Presenting knowledge in this way demonstrates master over the material and allows the instructor to see the material through the eyes of the student.
